AVAKA BZ20 PLUS 20" Step-Thru Folding Electric City Bike 500W Motor 48V 18.2Ah Battery

The reviews are all 4 and 5 star and overwhelmingly positive, which i can only assume are fake reviews.

The power of motor and battery are very good on this bike.

However the components are very very low quality and many changes had to be made to make the bike safely usable day to day.

Firstly the front headlight is not powerful enough for safe riding at night time. Almost had a few accidents and near misses due to it being not visible to other road users. I tried to swap it out for a road legal EDELUX light rated for ebikes up to 25km/h only to find out the LED output line on the controller wont put out enough watts to support a this more suitable light. So im stuck using lights that are not suitable for the rated speed of this bike.

Secondly for some strange reason the bike came with EXTREMELY short 152mm crank arms (standard is 170mm), a 42t chainring and a 14-28 freewheel. This made it physically impossible to pedal at speeds higher than 20km/h. I had to replace the whole drivetrain to be able to actually pedal up to 30km/h meaning i changed the chainset, longer crank arms, 52t chainring and added a 11-28 freewheel and it is just about rideable up to 30kmh.

The front suspension forks are very very poor. The suspension is either not doing anything, or suddently completely bottoms out if you hit a big bump with a rattling noise to acompany it. It would be much better to have put a rigid fork on since it has fat tyres anyway.

I went over the bike before riding to check everythng, but even so within a week the tubes were not holding air anymore (i had to add sealant to keep the tyres up), the headset was loose, handlebars have play and squeak etc.

finally the pedal assist sensor is very slow and only kicks the motor in several seconds after you start pedalling. meaning you have to rely on the throttle quite a lot, but also once you get moving and release the throttle, the motor will turn off for several seconds leaving you with no power while you keep pedaling, then kick in again. its very uncomfortable.

All of the nuts and bolts on the bike were not installed with anti seize compound, and they had already started rusting and seizing up after just a month of use.

The gear shifter must be one of the worst designs i have ever seen on a bike. Extremely uncomfortable to use and requires taking your hand off of the grip to change gears. its like a downtbe shifter attached to the bar.

Aside from all of that it has good power and speed and that along with the price compensates for all of the other down sides

Throttle and lights have stopped working and even though i ordered a new controller, head unit etc it still didnt fix the electrical issues and Avaka have stopped replying to support requests
