Whether you're new to e-bikes or you've been riding one for a while, you'll need to do some necessary maintenance based on how often you ride your bike to keep your e-bike in optimal riding condition.
Regular bike inspections, consistent cleaning, and careful attention to the construction of your e-bike are important not only to extend the life of your e-bike, but also to ensure safe riding.
Weekly bike inspection
- Check that the hardware is torqued correctly (i.e., tightened precisely, making sure they are not too loose or too tight). Refer to the manufacturer's instructions to make sure they meet the recommended torque values.
- Inspect the drivetrain (including chain, chainrings, cassettes, and derailleurs) to ensure it is properly aligned and operating seamlessly.
- Clean the frame by wiping it with a damp cloth, avoiding any moisture near the electric bike's electrical components and drivetrain.
- Bolts not tightened to recommended levels, a drivetrain that is not functioning properly, or damage to the bike's frame and/or electrical components can result in component failure or, worse, compromised riding safety.
- Check the brakes: When your e-bike is rolling next to you, pull one of the brake levers and the e-bike should stop immediately.
- Check battery charge: Turn on your e-bike and make sure it has enough charge for your trip.
Monthly bike inspection
- Check brake pad alignment and brake cable tension, and clean brake and shift cables. Watch for any corrosion or chipping between the brake or shift cables. This could be a sign of replacement!
- Continue to check that your bike is shifting properly, then clean and lubricate the drivetrain.
- Check spoke tension. If you find any loose spokes, check and tighten both wheels.
- Tighten all accessory mounts (frame bolts, fender hardware, and confirm alignment)
Monthly bike testing is followed by a complete tune-up. If you are a recreational rider, it is recommended that you have your e-bike professionally tuned up at least once a year to a year and a half; if you are a daily rider, it is recommended that you have a professional tune-up done twice a year. Your local bike shop may offer this service and will check all of the above and more to ensure your bike is performing its best and you are safe!
